Mary Kennedy Thompson, CEO of BNI - Open for Opportunity

Mary Kennedy Thompson, CEO of BNI, began her professional journey as a logistics officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. After her military service, she sought a new way to lead and carve her own path—franchising became that avenue. “Franchising is about the stories… It’s about transforming lives and making an impact,” she reflects, crediting a simple pamphlet on franchising for altering her career path.

Starting as a multi-unit franchise owner with Cookies by Design, Mary’s leadership skills flourished, leading her to become a Mr. Rooter franchisee, ultimately working for the parent company Neighborly as COO, where she oversaw 30 brands. Furthering her passion for franchising, Mary is now CEO of the franchise company BNI: Business Network International. She is a shining example of the ways military service can prepare someone for a career in franchising – regardless of the industry or where you fit within the model.

“Franchising is a natural fit for veterans—they understand systems, processes, and the pursuit of operational excellence,” she explains, highlighting how military experience translates seamlessly into the world of franchising. Mary also advocates for military spouses, emphasizing how franchising offers stability and a strong support network, empowering veterans and their families to succeed while navigating the unique challenges of military life. Her story is a testament to how the values instilled through military service can serve as a powerful foundation for success in franchising.
